I've been out of a full-time job for a year. That feels surreal to say out loud.
For much of that time, I kept asking myself the same question:
How do I make sure this time isn't wasted?
I'll be the first to admit that I am incredibly fortunate to be in position.
In spending a year away from a full-time job, I've experienced something many people can't (or won't) in their lifetime.
And for that reason alone, the burden of making the most of this time has weighed heavily on my shoulders. I may not have made the most of every moment, but I know I didn't waste this time.
Sure, the bank balance took a hit.
My year was filled with emotional peaks and valleys.
And life definitely shifted away from my old metrics of success.
But I set out to do exactly what I've always wanted:
To push myself out of my routine.
Break free from the comfort zone.
To finally back myself, instead of playing it safe.
The best part of being unemployed, especially if a full time job is all you've known, is getting the rare opportunity to escape your routine.
It gives you space to reevaluate your career from a new perspective.
Should I continue on the same path… or forge a new one?
Maybe you love your career and your current trajectory. Maybe this break is just a pit stop.
But maybe it's your opportunity to escape the restraints you've found yourself in. To give yourself a little push in a new direction.
For that reason, I encourage you to pause and ask yourself:
If this is the only break I get from my career, how do I want to spend it?
Yes, we all need time to unwind and recharge.
But before we know it, that break is over, and it's time to get back to work.
So finding balance quickly is key.
Don't just use this time to blob out before returning to the same old, same old.
Use this space to explore the things you've always talked about.
To spend a day writing a blog that only a handful of people might read.
To start a brand and stock your wardrobe... because why the hell not.
Or to fall in love with a new passion you never gave yourself the time to try.
Savour being unemployed.
This might be your best shot at doing something different.
Something you've always wanted.
